The Next Step

The past month has been a stressful, chaotic whirlwind in regards to finding a full-time job. After my internship this summer, I wasn’t sure that I chose the right field and I was making myself sick about it. My summer was spent largely staring at a computer screen and entering data into excel sheets. I couldn’t imagine spending the rest of my life doing this.

I have always dreamed of making a difference in some way, and I felt like my work was completely irrelevant- affecting nobody. I worked so hard over the past 18 years to get a great education, so that in turn I could have a great career and a comfortable lifestyle. Come the end of August,  I just couldn’t see that happening with the position that I was in. Everyday I was miserable and regretting my decision to pursue engineering. I questioned whether it was too late to apply for medical school or dental school. I questioned whether I should have pursued teaching. I questioned everything.

Eventually I had to force myself to stop stressing out about it and I did what I always do when I feel lost… I made a list. I made a list of all of the things that I wanted in a future career, no matter how far-fetched they seemed, and I prayed that some clarity would come to me.

A few weeks later, still worrying about a job, I emailed a contact in my field. Within moments, he called me and said that he had the perfect opportunity for me and that I was the exact type of candidate they were looking for… The only catch was that the position was in New York City.

My first reaction was to say “no, absolutely not.”  My entire life has been spent in Massachusetts, almost my entire family is here, my friends are here, everything is here. Against my first instinct, I said that I would go to New York City for the day to meet with the team there and that I would honestly try to have an open mind about it.

Within a week, I found myself on a train to New York City. Only two days after that, I found myself signing the offer letter for my very first full-time job in Manhattan!

It’s hard to explain, but during the day that I spent visiting with the company in New York, I could see so much potential. It was by far the best career opportunity that I came across as somebody fresh out of college. It met 9/10 of the things that were on my “list” (which I never thought I would find)- atmosphere, growth potential, flexibility, field work, etc. I felt comfortable and welcome. Never once had moving to New York City been part of my plan, but I felt excited.

With this job, I will not be stuck behind a desk for 40 hours per week. I will be working with a small team, being challenged daily, and exploring New York City. Approximately half of my time will be spent out in the field, reviewing the buildings of the city and interacting with clients, which is exactly what I was hoping for.

I am so excited for all of the potential that this opportunity brings. I am so nervous to move to a new (huge) city all by myself. I am so sad that I will no longer be within 20 minutes of my family. I am so worried about how this will change my relationships. I am so happy that I will be closer to my dad and stepmom. I am so grateful for the support I’ve felt regarding this decision. I am just SO full of emotion.

The next few months will surely be crazy as I begin to prepare for this next stage in my life, but I’m ready for it. God works in mysterious ways and I know in my heart that this is what I’m meant to be doing right now. Regardless of how scary it seems, I worked hard for this and now it’s my turn to spread my wings. I would not be in this position if it weren’t for my family and friends who supported me over the years and I am so so thankful for them.

I’m sure there will be many posts over the next few months as I get ready for this move, so be sure to check in!

Fall Favorites

Hi all!

I could not have been more excited to find out when I woke up that it was National Coffee Day today! One of my absolute favorite things to do on a chilly, fall day is to sit down with a nice big mug of coffee.

Screen Shot 2016-09-29 at 7.37.29 PM.png

This got me thinking about some of the other things that I love about fall, and there are lots and lots of them!

In the past, summer has always been my favorite season. I loved nothing more than spending all of my days out by the pool with a good book. Now that I have a full-time job during the summer and no pool to use daily, I find myself looking forward to the fall more and more each year.

Some of my top favorite things about fall:

  1. PUMPKIN EVERYTHING

Even though Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts released their pumpkin spice lattes and coffee weeks ago, I forced myself to wait until September 22nd (the actual first day of fall) to order one.

Now that that day has passed, I’m enjoying pumpkin fall beverages every chance that I get! Before you know it, Christmas drinks will be out!

2. Layering

I absolutely love being cozy. Whether this means curling up under a thick blanket (which is always my Vermont Flannel Throw that I am completely obsessed with), or bundling up with layers to spend the day studying, I love it. There are so many cute and comfy fall trends that I am completely obsessed with. It’s just so easy to throw on a big sweater and scarf and look like you made an effort for the day ;).

3. Football

While I will admit that I’ve never been a die-hard fan, I become more and more interested in watching football every year. There’s something about sitting down on a Sunday afternoon (or Thursday night) with a bunch of snacks and watching the Patriots kick some serious butt.

4. Santa is Coming!

Just kidding! (kind of) I love knowing that the holidays are right around the corner even if it is a little bit too early to start celebrating. Some of my favorite memories growing up coincide with Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

Last year’s family wreath-making night!

I love surprising my family with special gifts and just making the most of the time that we all get to spend together. I also love the fact that in just a few weeks it will finally be acceptable to start listening to christmas music again ;).

There are plenty more but I’m going to cut the list there for now and finish up the rest of my homework. Tomorrow I’m going to be sharing some very exciting news, so be sure to check in!

Weekend Recap

This weekend was a great one – filled with lots of friends and fun! On Friday night, I went out for appetizers and drinks with my fellow dance team seniors.

Don’t mind the bad picture quality!

We have been trying to get together more often lately and we had a blast. We went over to a delicious Mexican restaurant nearby called Mezcal. We got four pitchers of margaritas to split. After much debate, we decided on coconut raspberry, blood orange, mai tai, and guava flavors. They were all phenomenal.

We also split two large orders of guacamole! My favorite was the “tropical” flavor. It was regular guac combined with pecans, mango, and coconut. I know it sounds kind of strange, but trust me when I say that it was delicious.

On Saturday morning, I got up bright and early to head into Boston for an ugly sweater christmas bar crawl that a few of my friends and I had bought tickets for.  Three of us left on the 8:50 train so that we could get brunch in Boston before hand.

After walking all over creation trying to find somewhere that wasn’t packed, we ended up at the Trophy Room. We started off our day right with mimosas, easily one of the best ones that I have ever had.

I ordered eggs benedict for my meal. It came with seasoned homefries and  was topped with bacon, mushrooms, and sautéed spinach.

I ate every single bite and was in heaven. I will definitely be back here next time I find myself around the Back Bay of Boston!

After brunch, we headed over to the Faneuil Hall area to register for the bar crawl. We met up with the rest of our group on the way over. I was so excited to be reunited with my IQP group again!

So grateful for these three

We spent the rest of our day sipping on drinks, socializing, and taking in some of the ugliest christmas sweaters I have ever seen. This day was exactly what I needed to start getting in the holiday spirit (even though Christmas is less than two weeks away!).

Now, I am back to studying for finals and finishing up the last few reports that I have to do before break.

NYC

These last two days have been so hectic for me! I found out about a week ago that I would be traveling to NYC for a two day interview at a really great company. I was SO nervous to travel alone. I had only been to NYC a few times and they were all many years ago. I had also never flown or stayed over in a hotel completely alone. The days before the interview were filled with so much worry and anxiety, but I’m happy to say that it ended up being a very positive experience!

I arrived on Thursday afternoon and took a car to my hotel in the Financial District. I quickly got ready and headed over to the office for an information session, as well as hors d’oeuvres and a networking event. There were probably 50 other students that traveled to the city for this and it was great to meet some of them.

After several long hours of networking, I headed back to the hotel and ordered a late dinner via room service.

Room Service

I got a tomato and mozzarella sandwich with french fries. I was back just in time for Scandal, so I watched as I enjoyed my dinner.

Friday morning I woke up early and headed back to the office at 7:45 for my one-on-one interview. It was a quick half hour and I was back at the hotel before I knew it. I took a little nap, since I had barely slept the night before, and then headed down to the hotel gym.

Gym Hotel

It was a nice little gym and I was the only one there, which I loved! I tried a new leg workout that I found on Instagram.

Leg Day

I’m so sore today and loving it! I will definitely be incorporating it into my regular routine.

After my workout, I set out to take one more walk around the city. Unfortunately I didn’t get very far with the -20 degree windchill.

Selfie

I ended up taking a car back to the airport around noon and was able to hop on a 2 o’clock flight, rather than waiting until 8 o’clock as originally planned.

It was great getting out of my comfort zone and having some time completely on my own. I loved seeing the city and navigating my way around. I’m hoping to hear back about the job within a week or two. I’m crossing my fingers that something works out, but if not it was still an extremely valuable experience!

What’s Up?

One of the blogs that I regularly read did a post yesterday called “What’s Up Wednesday.” Unfortunately my schedule has been packed and I didn’t have a chance to jump on board and write a post yesterday, but I figure it’s better late than never!

So here is my “What’s Up Thursday!”… even though that doesn’t work quite as well..

What I’m Eating This Week:

Well, this topic isn’t very exciting in the life of a college student.. I’m still finishing up the homemade American Chop Suey that my mom dropped off for me on Monday, along with my usual staples – eggs, toast, yogurt, spinach, and veggie wraps. I also bought a few things at the grocery store though to make fiesta chicken one night during this upcoming week or weekend, so that’s exciting.

What I’m Reading:

I am reading “For The Right Reasons” by Sean Lowe. I mentioned it in my post here a few weeks ago. I just got started, but so far so good. 🙂

What I’m Reminiscing About:

The warm weather and the perfect cruise vacation that I took last year. I would give anything to be back in the Caribbean right now!

What I’m Looking Forward To:

The next few months of traveling that are in store for me. I can’t wait to explore the other side of the world.

What I’m Loving:

My Gratitude Journal! I truly believe that this has changed my outlook completely by making me focus on all of the good things that happen on a daily basis rather than the bad. I highly suggest keeping one if you don’t!

What I’ve Been Up To:

School work, school work, and more school work. It’s getting down to crunch time now that I leave in only 3 weeks. It’s not very exciting or pretty, but I know all of my hard work will pay off in the future.

What I’m Dreading:

Walking out the door tomorrow morning into the freezing New England air…

What I’m Working On:

My relationships with friends that mean the most to me. I want to take advantage of these last few weeks that we have together before I head off to Australia and we go our own ways for the summer. I can’t believe that we will be starting our senior year together soon!

What I’m Excited About:

Valentine’s Day! I absolutely love this holiday and all the cheesiness that comes with it.

IMAG0992_1

Conor and I have fancy plans that I will share later. 🙂

What I’m Watching:

The Bachelor and Scandal! Love love love these two shows – even if The Bachelor is more of a guilty pleasure.

What I’m Hoping For:

This week has been extremely hectic for me, so I am hoping that next week calms down a bit. If not, at least I have the weekend to recuperate and prepare.

Look out tomorrow for Friday’s Fabulous Five.

Jaclyn
