Family is Everything

This past weekend was perfectly relaxing and happy. It had been awhile since I had a weekend with nothing planned, but sometimes that’s just what you need.

Friday night I stayed in and watched a movie with my family before heading to bed by 10 PM. Can you say grandma? No shame.

Saturday morning I woke up bright and early to enjoy a cup of coffee and indulge in a good book on the deck before going to my hair appointment.

There’s not much I love more than starting my day off in this very way. I hope there’s a lot more of this in my future! I was reading Me Before You by Jojo Moyes. It was a great story that kept me captivated from the first page to the last. I will admit that I did shed a tear or two throughout, but now I can’t wait to see the movie. I highly recommend it if you’re looking for an end of summer read!

After my haircut, I went out for a round of golf with my brother and my aunt. We were all having a terrible game, but had a great time together anyways. Unforunately, when we got to the fourth hole the thunder and lightening cut our game short. We packed up and decided to have a family game night instead!

On Sunday morning, the whole family piled in the car and headed to Boda Borg to compete in some escape room challenges.

There are physical challenges and mental challenges that each team must complete in order to move on in the quest, and let me tell you – they are not easy! We had a blast though! I don’t think any of us have laughed that hard in awhile. 🙂

We ended the weekend in the best possible way – with an ice cream from Kimball Farm.

I usually only get here once per summer, but it is always a highlight. I always get the cherry vanilla chocolate chip ice cream and love every bite.

Feeling so thankful to have spent a great weekend with my family.

Girl’s Weekend

I’ve been meaning to write this post for a week and a half now but just haven’t gotten around to it. Working 40 hours a week plus 12 hours of commuting certainly takes a lot out of me. Most nights by the time that I get home, the last thing that I want to do is sit down in front of yet another computer screen. Regardless, I’m trying my best to keep up with this!

Last weekend I went down to West Hartford for a girl’s weekend. Most of us hadn’t seen each other since graduation, so we were super excited to be reunited! On Friday night, we want to Bar Taco at Blue Back Square.

IMG_1124.JPG

It was such a cute and fun place for dinner and drinks. The food was good, but not my favorite as it was a little too spicy for me. If you love spicy Mexican food though, this is the place for you.

On Saturday morning, we woke up at 7AM to attend a free “Morning Yoga in the Streets” event. I loved every second of it.

IMG_1131.PNG

Most of the yoga studios in the area participated and there were tons and tons of people there. The class was very fast paced and quite challenging, especially considering all of the different skill levels there. Since taking this class, I’ve been wanting to get back into practicing yoga more regularly.

Once we finished up, we headed out to brunch (my favorite part of any weekend) at the Pond House Cafe. The dining room that we ate in was located right in the middle of a big garden, with a beautiful patio that you could eat out on. They also had a huge banquet hall where they host weddings and other large events. Unfortunately, I left my phone at home and so I couldn’t take any pictures.

On top of the cute atmosphere, the food was phenomenal. I had a green apple, brie, and spinach omelet with a side of corn bread. All of the ingredients were fresh and very tasty! This was the type of place that I could imagine bringing my family for breakfast after church on Sundays. 🙂

After brunch we headed down to the Farmington River to go tubing, which was perfect because it was HOT all weekend.

We spent about 3 hours relaxing and floating down the river, all while catching up and snacking on cut up watermelon. I had a great day and would love to do this again sometime soon.

On Saturday night, we headed up to Worcester to pick up one of our friends who flew in from California for the weekend and spent the rest of the weekend hanging out with her.

There’s nothing better than laughing with your best girlfriends. I already can’t wait to see them again!

Sunday morning, Emily and I stopped for a bagel and coffee before our drive back home. It was my first time having Bruegger’s Bagels and I fell in love.

Anybody who knows me knows that I am a huge bagel person, and these certainly lived up to their reputation. I already can’t wait for my next visit to the area so I can have another one ;).

Fire Station Overnight

Last night I stayed the night at a fire station in a suburb outside of Melbourne. This was incorporated into the project I am working on here so that my team could get a better idea of what happens with fire fighters when they are on the job.

IMAG1905

I arrived at the station around 5:30 pm with dessert. Everyone told us that we should have some type of food for them. All of the firefighters were very welcoming and friendly. They showed me around the station and had me lay out my gear so that I would be ready to go.

Not five minutes after I arrived, the alarm started sounding and they all yelled at me to hurry up. As soon as I started running to the trucks the emergency speaker said “Welcome Jackie. Have a great night at the station.” They thought that it was the funniest joke. They even gave me a print out of the “incident” report that they made up for that to happen.

Around 6:30 we ordered fish and chips from a small place down the road and 3 of us set off in the rescue truck to pick it up. I had never actually ridden in a fire truck before so I thought it was pretty cool.

Over the rest of the evening we watched a footy game on TV – complete with a money pool on what the final score would be. By midnight, we had already responded to three calls. None of them were anything that exciting but it was very cool to be able to turn out with them!

Overall it was a great experience!

Australian Rules Football

This weekend has been very relaxed after all of the excitement of last.

Yesterday, we bought tickets for a pro Australian football game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

IMAG1887

If you have never seen this sport played, I encourage you to search it on YouTube. It was nuts! The field is enormous and the players wear little to no gear, but spend the entire time violently tackling each other!

IMAG1889

It was a beautiful day to watch a game with friends.

On a side note, I only have 3 more weekends left in Melbourne. I can’t believe how fast this time has gone by! While I am trying to take in every last moment, I am excited to see me family and friends again. I really miss all of them and wish they could be here to experience this beautiful place with me. I especially know my cousin Joey would love it 😉 (He may or may not have been waiting for me to mention him on here… Lol).

Cairnes Recap: Barefoot Tour and Pool Day

Hi everyone!

Today I am going to do a recap of my last two days in Cairnes. I would say these were my favorite two days, but I honestly loved my entire time there.

On Sunday morning, we woke up for a Barefoot Tour. We weren’t really sure what this entailed, but we knew that the group that came here earlier this year absolutely loved it. Before boarding the bus, Shannon and I walked over to a small market to pick up something quick for breakfast. I found a little paleo section where they had home-made apricot, coconut, and walnut muffins. I grabbed one of those and a banana before I headed back to the bus. I’m definitely looking for a recipe for these muffins once I get home! They were so healthy too – gluten and dairy free!

The bus that we boarded looked like something out of That 70’s Show. It was an actual hippy van, complete with flowers lining the entire inside ceiling and fake grass rolled out as a carpet. The driver/tour guide came running over to Shannon and I as we walked towards him and picked me up and swung me around in a giant hug before doing the same to her. The first thing that he said was “We are all family here and today, if nothing else, I want you to just blurt out anything that comes to your mind.” We laughed and boarded the bus, not really sure how the day was going to turn out…

Once we got going, our tour guide Josh let us know that we would be going to all of most popular waterfalls in the area over the course of the day. He said there were no rules and the day was all about relaxing and having fun.

The first place that we stopped at was a big lake.

It was pretty secluded and there was one big tree branch hanging out over the water that we could jump out of. I didn’t jump, but I did go in the water for a few minutes. It  was freezing and it really wasn’t anything special.

While we were swimming, Josh and the other guide got morning tea and coffee ready for us. They had two huge fruit platters complete with all types of exotic fruit. I could not stop eating it. While I am loving the food here, my stomach has been bothering me because of all the junk I have been eating. I was so excited when I saw bananas, mangos, lychee, passionfruit, and other fruits that I had never seen before. I ate my fair share and loved all of it.

After morning tea, we loaded back into the bus and took off to the first actual waterfall.

As soon as we arrived and I saw this, I knew that the day was going to get infinitely better. I wanted to dive right in and swim out to the waterfall. Unfortunately, the water was probably the coldest I had ever been in. We all agreed that we just had to suck it up and swim out there!

Shannon and I honestly thought that we were drowning as we got close to the falls. We were shaking because we were so cold and swimming against the current. Of course, the fact that we were laughing our heads off didn’t help our efforts either.

Once we finally made out way over, the swim was worth it. It was so cool to just sit and look at the sun reflecting through the water that was falling over us.

We attempted to take a group photo but it was really hard with all of the slippery rocks. At this point in the day, all of the guys in our group had started drinking bags of wine. They actually insisted on carrying them out to the waterfall during their swim so that they could say that they drank wine under the waterfall… The girls wanted no part of it.

After making our way back to shore, we took some more pictures and sat down to eat a few more snacks. We stopped at a grocery store on the way to this location, so I had some cheese and crackers with trail mix. We only stayed at this location for about an hour before heading off to the next.

Josh told us on the bus that if we liked that waterfall, we would be in heaven with the next one… and he was right.

This waterfall was enormous!! We had to hike for about 10 minutes to get down to the bottom of it, where we put all of our things and began exploring.

Screen Shot 2015-04-08 at 7.27.47 PM

Some of us took on the challenge of trying to climb up behind the falls. It was really tough and I spent most of the time walking with both my hands and feet so that I didn’t slip.

Screen Shot 2015-04-08 at 7.39.11 PM

Once I made it to the top, the view was amazing. I could have sat up there all day.

Screen Shot 2015-04-08 at 7.40.52 PM

I stayed in the water the entire time, even once I was back down at the bottom. I just couldn’t get enough of how crisp, clear, and fresh it was. We had a lot of fun taking pictures and hanging out!

Our last location of the day was where we spent most of our time. It was a publicly known waterfall, so there were quite a few people there. It was still a blast. There was a huge rock that you could climb up and slide down. I was a little nervous at first, but once I went down once I couldn’t get enough.

We went down in groups…

and some of the guys were trying to stand going down it… I thought for sure there would be a trip to the ER, especially after all the wine that they drank…

We had a really fun day! Overall, the Barefoot Tour was awesome. I would highly recommend doing it if you are ever in Cairnes!!

After getting back that night, we were all pretty exhausted and went to bed early.

The next day, Monday, was the only day that we didn’t have an adventure planned and it worked out perfectly. It was nice being able to sleep in a bit and have a low key day at the lagoon.

After breakfast the next morning, we headed over to the lagoon and laid out our towels. It was almost 95 degrees, so we were in the water almost the entire day. Being with a group of 10 guys gets a little rambunctious though, and before we knew it we were providing entertainment for the entire pool. There was a group of three guys around our age trying to do a three person shoulder pyramid across the pool, and of course we had to challenge them.

tower

I was really impressed that we were able to do this! We had a solid four person tower, that we mastered after some practice, but were really struggling to get five. Even the lifeguards were cheering for us. Luckily, I was on the top so I didn’t have too much work to do. 🙂 The counterpart to that though was that I did biggest belly flop of my life from up there at one point when we fell over. Lol. One of my friends even got it on video.

Around 5pm, we went back to the hotel to shower and get ready for our flights back home. We had an awesome weekend full of laughter and what I am sure will be life-long memories! I am so grateful to have experienced this with such a fun group of people.
