Cairnes Recap: Barefoot Tour and Pool Day

Hi everyone!

Today I am going to do a recap of my last two days in Cairnes. I would say these were my favorite two days, but I honestly loved my entire time there.

On Sunday morning, we woke up for a Barefoot Tour. We weren’t really sure what this entailed, but we knew that the group that came here earlier this year absolutely loved it. Before boarding the bus, Shannon and I walked over to a small market to pick up something quick for breakfast. I found a little paleo section where they had home-made apricot, coconut, and walnut muffins. I grabbed one of those and a banana before I headed back to the bus. I’m definitely looking for a recipe for these muffins once I get home! They were so healthy too – gluten and dairy free!

The bus that we boarded looked like something out of That 70’s Show. It was an actual hippy van, complete with flowers lining the entire inside ceiling and fake grass rolled out as a carpet. The driver/tour guide came running over to Shannon and I as we walked towards him and picked me up and swung me around in a giant hug before doing the same to her. The first thing that he said was “We are all family here and today, if nothing else, I want you to just blurt out anything that comes to your mind.” We laughed and boarded the bus, not really sure how the day was going to turn out…

Once we got going, our tour guide Josh let us know that we would be going to all of most popular waterfalls in the area over the course of the day. He said there were no rules and the day was all about relaxing and having fun.

The first place that we stopped at was a big lake.

It was pretty secluded and there was one big tree branch hanging out over the water that we could jump out of. I didn’t jump, but I did go in the water for a few minutes. It  was freezing and it really wasn’t anything special.

While we were swimming, Josh and the other guide got morning tea and coffee ready for us. They had two huge fruit platters complete with all types of exotic fruit. I could not stop eating it. While I am loving the food here, my stomach has been bothering me because of all the junk I have been eating. I was so excited when I saw bananas, mangos, lychee, passionfruit, and other fruits that I had never seen before. I ate my fair share and loved all of it.

After morning tea, we loaded back into the bus and took off to the first actual waterfall.

As soon as we arrived and I saw this, I knew that the day was going to get infinitely better. I wanted to dive right in and swim out to the waterfall. Unfortunately, the water was probably the coldest I had ever been in. We all agreed that we just had to suck it up and swim out there!

Shannon and I honestly thought that we were drowning as we got close to the falls. We were shaking because we were so cold and swimming against the current. Of course, the fact that we were laughing our heads off didn’t help our efforts either.

Once we finally made out way over, the swim was worth it. It was so cool to just sit and look at the sun reflecting through the water that was falling over us.

We attempted to take a group photo but it was really hard with all of the slippery rocks. At this point in the day, all of the guys in our group had started drinking bags of wine. They actually insisted on carrying them out to the waterfall during their swim so that they could say that they drank wine under the waterfall… The girls wanted no part of it.

After making our way back to shore, we took some more pictures and sat down to eat a few more snacks. We stopped at a grocery store on the way to this location, so I had some cheese and crackers with trail mix. We only stayed at this location for about an hour before heading off to the next.

Josh told us on the bus that if we liked that waterfall, we would be in heaven with the next one… and he was right.

This waterfall was enormous!! We had to hike for about 10 minutes to get down to the bottom of it, where we put all of our things and began exploring.

Some of us took on the challenge of trying to climb up behind the falls. It was really tough and I spent most of the time walking with both my hands and feet so that I didn’t slip.

Once I made it to the top, the view was amazing. I could have sat up there all day.

I stayed in the water the entire time, even once I was back down at the bottom. I just couldn’t get enough of how crisp, clear, and fresh it was. We had a lot of fun taking pictures and hanging out!

Our last location of the day was where we spent most of our time. It was a publicly known waterfall, so there were quite a few people there. It was still a blast. There was a huge rock that you could climb up and slide down. I was a little nervous at first, but once I went down once I couldn’t get enough.

We went down in groups…

and some of the guys were trying to stand going down it… I thought for sure there would be a trip to the ER, especially after all the wine that they drank…

We had a really fun day! Overall, the Barefoot Tour was awesome. I would highly recommend doing it if you are ever in Cairnes!!

After getting back that night, we were all pretty exhausted and went to bed early.

The next day, Monday, was the only day that we didn’t have an adventure planned and it worked out perfectly. It was nice being able to sleep in a bit and have a low key day at the lagoon.

After breakfast the next morning, we headed over to the lagoon and laid out our towels. It was almost 95 degrees, so we were in the water almost the entire day. Being with a group of 10 guys gets a little rambunctious though, and before we knew it we were providing entertainment for the entire pool. There was a group of three guys around our age trying to do a three person shoulder pyramid across the pool, and of course we had to challenge them.

tower

I was really impressed that we were able to do this! We had a solid four person tower, that we mastered after some practice, but were really struggling to get five. Even the lifeguards were cheering for us. Luckily, I was on the top so I didn’t have too much work to do. 🙂 The counterpart to that though was that I did biggest belly flop of my life from up there at one point when we fell over. Lol. One of my friends even got it on video.

Around 5pm, we went back to the hotel to shower and get ready for our flights back home. We had an awesome weekend full of laughter and what I am sure will be life-long memories! I am so grateful to have experienced this with such a fun group of people.

Landed in Melbourne!

After over 24 long hours of traveling, I am finally in Melbourne! I am sitting out on a bench in a little garden next to my hotel wearing shorts and a t-shirt, and I couldn’t be happier. The locals keep telling us that it is a chilly day – but it’s almost 80 degrees.

My first flight from Boston to LA was horrible. I have never felt so sick, so suddenly. My mom and grandma both had a terrible cold before I left, and sure enough I must have caught it. I was afraid that I was going to have to stay the night in LA and wouldn’t be able to make it another 16 hours on a plane. My face was burning, but I was so cold that I couldn’t stop shivering – it was miserable. I bought some medicine at LAX, chugged two Powerades, and boarded my next long flight with hopes that I would feel better soon.

Luckily, I slept almost 12 hours straight on the leg of our flight from LAX to Melbourne and it really helped me feel better. I also got extremely lucky that I was in an aisle seat and the two seats next to me were completely empty! I was able to spread out and lay down a bit.

Right now I am waiting for two of my friends to finish showering, and then we are going to head down to the beach. We are also meeting our advisors for dinner tonight since we are the first students here. 🙂

I will try to post some pictures later tonight.

Wedges

Last night I caved in and bought myself a little reward for finishing up two big school projects and securing a summer internship! I always have trouble justifying buying things for myself, but I figured that these cute Charles David wedges were well deserved.

Wedges

I don’t have any black wedges and I thought these would be so cute to bring on my trip. I mentioned last week that I was originally looking for a tan pair, but these were too good of a deal to pass up. They were 64% off at Nordstrom Rack!

I absolutely love the look of wedges to dress up or dress down any outfit during the summer months. I always admire people who incorporate these into their everyday outfits rather than saving them for special occasions. They look just as cute with shorts and a t-shirt as they do with a sundress! I think one of my goals this summer will be to wear my new (and old) wedges more often.

I thought this would be a perfect little post in honor of the fact that it will be 80 degrees when I land in Australia in less than one week. 🙂

Friday’s Fabulous Five

Lately I have been in a serious shopping mood. Unfortunately, when you’re a college student and trying to save every penny that comes your way, a shopping spree isn’t always a possibility. Instead, I like to browse online and make note of things that I love so that when I do have a little extra money, I know exactly what I want to use it for. A few of the things that I’m loving this week are things that I have found online, but don’t actually own.

1. Color Karma Bracelets

Color Karma

I am obsessed with these bracelets. They come in a variety of colors that each stand for something different – beauty, balance, strength, wisdom, hope, bliss, love, calm, harmony, and goodness. I think my favorite is the “calm” one pictured above. I love the little charms attached and how they come in a stack. I think that these are so cute and could make the perfect gift for a sister or friend!

2. Nude Wedges

In the warm weather, I love wearing wedges. I love how you can dress them up or down, and don’t feel like you are going to fall over every time you take a step. I have one fun colored pair that I wear often, but most of the time I find myself reaching for my mom’s nude colored ones. I am always on the lookout for a neutral pair of my own, and I think I finally found exactly what I have been looking for!

Wedge

These Dolce Vita wedges are so cute and have awesome reviews, though they are a little bit on the expensive side. I absolutely love the braided detail on these. They also come in other fun colors.

3. Statement Necklaces

Lately I have been on a kick with these. I love how they can pull together an entire outfit so effortlessly. I was hoping to grab a few more for myself before I leave for Australia. Since I’ll likely be repeating the same outfits over and over, different necklaces and accessories could really help add some variety to my wardrobe.

Blue Green

I thought this necklace was really cute and fun! It also comes in fun a bright fuschia color.

4. Emergen-C

I know my mom is so proud to see that this is one of my favorite things this week. Don’t get me wrong I hate the taste and texture of this, but I do believe it works wonders to combat a cold. I mix it into a cold glass of water and chug it first thing in the morning as soon as I start to feel under the weather.

5. Dance Team

I’m so proud of my college competition dance team. We worked really hard on our dance all year and last weekend at our competition it paid off! Even though we still have a lot more work to do, I’m proud of how far we have come over the past few years.

I’m Back!

Hi all!

I haven’t written in about a month but am glad to say that I am back at it now. 🙂 I’ve gotten completely swept up in working full time and still trying to enjoy every second of my summer. I can’t believe it’s time to get back to school in just two weeks! Time really does fly.

Update

Over the past month I have done a number of wonderful things! I spent a significant amount of time with my family, which I don’t get to do much while I am at school, and enjoyed every moment of it. Here are a few of my favorite moments that you missed…

1. Toby Keith Concert!

         10345761_10204278425309660_5494679633737497560_n

For my mom’s birthday the whole family went to see Toby Keith. I have always loved his music but had never seen him in concert, and I love him even more now! My mom has seen him six time and is a quite the die-hard fan, which I understand now. We spent the morning picking up snacks, packing the car, and coordinating schedules with everyone. We arrived at the stadium around 4pm and had a few fulfilled hours of tailgating!

One of the best parts was that my cousin, Kelsey, was home from Colorado visiting for the week and came with us. Kelsey and I grew up together, more like sisters than cousins, and I’ve really been missing her since she left in February. She recently enlisted in the Marines and in less than one month she will be shipping off to bootcamp. I won’t see her until around Christmas time again so it was really great to catch up!

2. Jason Aldean Concert!

10423806_10204325997178927_1525899395322249364_n

My awesome boyfriend surprised me a few months ago with tickets to Jason Aldean for last weekend. We had a blast! His brother and friend came along, and we met up with a few of my friends from school there. It was a great night and we all had a blast.

3. Cape Cod Vacation

The stunning view from our hotel!
The stunning view from our hotel!

We spent most of last week vacationing in the Cape. I absolutely love it there and my family did too (it was their first time :)). It’s so relaxing and embodies everything that I imagine about summertime. The salty ocean air, ice cream shops everywhere, seafood at every meal, s’mores around a bonfire and sunsets on the beach. We all came back on Sunday extremely relaxed and excited to visit Cape Cod again someday soon.

We visited P-Town one day and spent the rest of our time on the beach. 🙂
