Life as a Recent Grad: 1 Month Out

Before I graduated college, I spent a lot of time researching and reading anything that I could get my hands on regarding my transition to the “real world.” I read some horror stories, some too good to be true stories, and everything in between. Now that I’ve been working full-time for one month, I thought it might be fun to share some of the things that I’ve learned, things that I’ve struggled with, and things that I love about being a young professional.

1. I think the best part of no longer being in college is that once you leave work for the day or week, you are done. There is no homework to do, no meetings, no clubs, etc. You can use your time exactly as you want to without feeling guilty that you’re slacking on some other commitment. This isn’t quite the case for me yet as I have spent the past month studying for an upcoming test, but I imagine that it will be great.

2. Sometimes you will feel like you have no idea what you are doing and that’s okay. I struggle with this on a daily basis. Sometimes at work I feel like a 5th grader would be more helpful than I am. I ask as many questions as I can and try to educate myself when I have downtime, but I still feel like I am behind. I constantly have to remind myself that most of my colleagues have been working the same type of job for years and years – so obviously they are more knowledgeable than I am! It’s easy to start feeling flustered and get in your own head about this type of thing. I’m hoping this resolves itself in time.

3. I have already lost touch with 95% of my college friends. Not completely, but we don’t catch up nearly as much as we used to. It’s very easy to get caught up in your day-to-day work routine and let relationships fall to the side. This can make you feel extremely lonely (especially if you are living in a new area). I think in the long run this will be a good thing though. It helps you determine who you are willing to put in the work to maintain a friendship with, and who is willing to do the same for you. As I get older, I would much rather have a few very close friends than tons of just okay friends.

4. This life is exactly what you make of it. That seems really deep, but I find myself thinking about it more and more lately. There is nobody else to blame if I am unhappy with my job, myself, or my life in general. You have to put in the effort to create the type of lifestyle that you want. It’s very easy to get stuck into a routine of going through the motions – getting up early, working all day, coming home to have dinner, laying on the couch until bed. Of course, sometimes this type of day is exactly what you need, but for me at least,  this doesn’t seem like living intentionally (one of my New Year Resolutions). I want to create healthy and fun lifestyle habits that I can carry over to my future family someday. I want to create a habit of doing at least one active thing each day and cooking dinner every night. These are two things that I have chosen to focus on for now, but I’m hoping to add more in the future once these things become the normal for me.

Overall this is probably the hardest adjustment I have ever gone through, and I would bet that is true for 99% of college graduates. It’s important to remember that everyone goes through it at some point and things will get better. I’m hoping to create a mini-series on this topic, so look out for more of my thoughts on the post-grad transition coming next month. 🙂

Friday Favorites (On Sunday)

**Disclaimer: I wrote this post on Friday evening and just now am realizing that it never posted :(. I’ve been having some troubles with WordPress lately, but I’m hoping that its back to normal soon.**

We finally made it to the weekend! I am going to visit my dad today and hopefully spend the rest of the weekend relaxing and catching up on some studying.

I wanted to bring back something that I have done in the past called “Friday Favorites.” I really enjoyed sharing different things that I liked with you, and am going to try to get back into the habit of doing so each week. Here are a few things that I’m loving right now!

  1. Sweaty Bands

For as long as I can remember, I have struggled to find a headband that was comfortable and effective at holding my hair out of my face during my workouts… until I found these!

Dan’s mom and sisters introduced me to them a few months ago and since then I have been obsessed. They are so cute, comfortable, and don’t slip at all when you’re moving around. They also come in tons of colors and patterns. These are a new must have for me!

SweatyBand still in place after 30 minutes of cardio!

     2. Aquaphor Lip Treatment

I have the most horrible dry and cracked lips in the winter time. It happens instantly the moment the weather cools down. This year it felt especially bad. I was even struggling to sleep during the night without waking up in pain every hour or so… until I found this.

This is like a miracle lip treatment and immediately provided me with so much relief. It doesn’t strip your lips of any natural oils or leave them even drier once it wears off, which I have found of most similar products. This comes highly recommended from me!

3. Urban Decay Naked Skin One and Done

For a long time, I’ve been looking for a sheer foundation that is gentle enough for me to wear everyday. I had been eying this product for a long time before I finally bit the bullet and bought it, and it is so worth it.

I apply it every morning after my moisturizer and it makes my skin feel softer and look more even. I’ve also noticed that it has seemed to decrease the size of my pores as I use it more consistently. I also love that it has SPF in it. It’s so important to protect your skin everyday – especially if you want to try and avoid getting any wrinkles for as long as possible.

4. Essie Gel Couture Polish

Some people love getting their hair done frequently, others love getting monthly facials, I love having my nails done. It just makes me feel so much better when I look down and see freshly painted nails with no chips. In the past, I loved gel manicures because they lasted 2+ weeks without chipping at all. This was my go-to because each time I got a regular manicure, I felt like I was taking the polish off within a day or two, which was a complete waste of time and money. Unfortunately, the gel polish ended up being far too harsh on my nails. They hurt all the time, were brittle, peeling, and burning. It was awful. It took about 6 months for my nails to completely heal from this.

Since starting a new job, I have been on a mission to figure out how to have my nails look nice all time time without using UV gel polish and I finally figured it out. For almost the past month now I have been getting my nails done with the Essie Gel Couture Polish. This goes on and can be removed just like regular polish, but lasts almost two weeks! I am not kidding you – I had NO chips after 7 days and very minimal chipping after 12.

Loved this color!

It cost me $3 more than a regular manicure, but was still far less than a UV gel manicure. My nails feel and look healthier than they have in a long time and I couldn’t be happier. I would highly recommend this polish to anyone who has trouble with sensitive nails.

That’s all for now, but I hope you enjoyed reading. I would love to hear what you’re loving lately!

First Weekend Visitors!

So I’m a little behind here (per usual) but I wanted to fill you all in on the fantastic past weekend that I had with my mom and brother.

Before they arrived on Saturday morning, I woke up early and took a walk downtown to a cute little coffee shop called “bwe kafe.” I heard about this place through Instagram and I am so glad that I decided to go check it out.

They had the cutest little set up and I loved the atmosphere. I’m hoping to spent a few hours here this weekend catching up on some studying!

I ordered a dirty chai latte, which was essentially a chai latte with a shot of espresso. It was so perfect and I have been craving one ever since. Though next time I do think that I’ll go with 2 shots of espresso!

When I got home from the coffee shop, Anthony and my mom were here! We brought up all of the stuff that didn’t make it into my car during the first move and spent a few hours unpacking and chatting.

By the time we finished, we were starving and decided to head over to Mom’s favorite deli – Fiore’s. We got roast beef and mozzarella subs and they were just as great as we remembered from last time that we visited there.

We spent the rest of the afternoon curled up on the couch watching movies and napping. Around 7 o’clock, Anthony was starving so we ordered pizza and wings to snack on during the football game.

On Sunday morning, we woke up early and headed into the city for a fun and touristy day, starting with Times Square!

We went into the M&M store and the Hershey store, both of which were absolutely packed for so early in the morning. We had enough of the huge crowds after that, so we decided to head over to Rockefeller Center.

On our way we stopped into St. Patrick’s Cathedral, which was just recently renovated. It was beautiful inside. I wish we could have stayed for mass!

Screen Shot 2017-01-19 at 9.03.35 PM.png

We spent the rest of our day walking down 5th avenue, visiting Madison Square Garden, and getting an awesome lunch at “The Counter.” We had huge cheeseburgers with french fries, which pretty much put us into food induced comas immediately.

screen-shot-2017-01-19-at-9-01-12-pm

We headed back to Hoboken and spent the rest of the afternoon napping and hanging out.

Even after our fun weekend, I think my favorite part was coming home from work on Monday night to dinner on the table and all of my grocery shopping done for the week. I am so lucky and already can’t wait for their next visit!

I have a fun post coming up regarding some of the things that I’m loving lately, so keep an eye out! 🙂

Happy Saturday!

Today is an extra happy Saturday because my mom and my brother came down to visit me! Anthony is working on a paper right now though, so I figured I would hop on here for a few minutes and catch up with all of you.

I am so proud of myself after this week for a few reasons. The main reason being that I finished my first full week of working in and commuting to NYC, as well as living in my very own apartment. I had been so nervous for this week for so long, but now I realize that I had no reason to be. It was a piece of cake…. well kind of. I struggled a bit towards the end just because I was so darn exhausted.

Mandatory first day of work selfie!

The second reason is because I worked out this week every morning at 5:30 before work. If you know me, you know that I would be happy sleeping until 10:30 every single day. This was so hard, but I’m so happy that I forced myself to do it. I loved coming home each night knowing that I had already been active for the day.

Before moving to Hoboken, I did tons and tons of research regarding which gym would be the best for me to join. Unfortunately, fitness is super expensive in this area and as a new grad, I’m still trying to get on my feet. Eventually I hope to start taking classes here and there at local studios (they have barre, yoga, and spin classes that I can’t wait to try ) but for now, I figured a program that I could do for less money from my apartment would be best.

With this criteria, I decided to jump on the Beachbody bandwagon and sign up for a year of on demand workouts. This allows me to stream any workout that I want straight to my TV and includes a great variety. Some of the more popular ones included are Insanity, P90X, 21 Day Fix, and Core de Force. I’ve mixed it up a bit to see how I liked the different programs and I haven’t been disappointed yet.

Right now I’m fully committed to 21 Day Fix and have already finished Day 7/21! I’ve been sore every day and I LOVE that the workouts are only 30 minutes each. I’m not sure I could handle getting up much earlier than 5:30 everyday!

My favorite post-workout / pre-work protein shake 🙂

Now I’m off to the supermarket to get some snacks and games for us to enjoy during the Patriots game. Go Pats!!

New Year’s Resolutions

Each January I find myself struggling to set my goals for the year. This may be because I tend to make small goals and resolutions for myself year round – rather than trying to tackle too much at once. This is what I’ve been telling myself at least.

After much thinking lately though, I think that I try to steer away from New Year’s Resolutions because I’m afraid that I won’t meet them. According to Statistic Brain, each year, only 9.2% of people have success sticking to their resolutions– which is crazy to me!!

I decided that this year I am going to be one of the few and make it a priority to meet my goals. Here are a few of the goals that I set to try and make 2017 the best year yet.

Screen Shot 2017-01-07 at 11.44.10 AM.png1. Be more INTENTIONAL

To live more intentionally means that you are present and engaged in the every day ongoings of your life. You make choices to consciously better your quality of life. This could be as simple as getting off of Facebook and focusing on conversation with your family. It means that I will focus on doing things that I know will make me happy and add value to my life, rather than just fill time.

2. Stop caring what others think

This is something that I struggle with every day. I have gotten better in the past year, but there is still definitely room for improvement. Occasionally I find myself not doing things that I want to do out of fear that others will be judgmental or look down upon me. I constantly question what people are thinking about the things that I do, and I’ll be the first to say that I just care way too much. This is no way to live and is something that I have been trying really hard to change.

3. Share Always My Sunshine with friends

I really want to focus on this blog in the upcoming year. Only a handful of family members and friends know about it, and I would love to expand the number of people that I reach. I’m not putting a time limit on this, because I really want to find my niche. I want to be completely enamored with my blog before I share it with others.  I often go back and forth debating what I want this space to be focused on – whether it be traveling, food, fitness, fashion, or just life in general. While I know what I want to achieve with my writing, I still haven’t determined the best method of doing so. Regardless, I have big goals and am excited to see them unfold!

4. Journal every day

Last year around this time I bought myself a journal and faithfully wrote in it each morning before school. I documented things I was worried about, grateful for, praying for, and everything in between. I not only loved being able to look back on these entries to see how far I had come, but I loved the weight that journaling took off of my shoulders. I could share anything that I wanted without the feeling that I was bothering others with my worries, complaining too much, or boasting too much about the wonderful things in my life. I would highly recommend journaling daily if you have never tried it!

I have a few other personal and work related goals, but these four will be my major focus in 2017!

Jaclyn
